After I finished it, I was almost depressed because it had gotten me through the after Holiday blahs and part of the horrible weather we have here in the Midwest. Series are my favorite, but there were episodes in that I also really enjoyed.
I discovered Monarch of the Glen after Ballykissangel and it was a perfect series to follow. You won't be disappointed! I'm in agreement with you there.
Assumpta was one of my favorite characters on that show. I just finished Season 3 tonight. I don't know if I'll continue with the other half of the run. Maybe, but it'll be some time before I put it in my Blockbuster queue. I just can't right now. Right now I have another series in the queue being mailed to me now Not exactly on the light side, but a different change of pace all the same.
I waited nearly a year after finishing series to start watching 4. It's ok, but I am not on the edge of my seat like with Peter and Assumpta. First 4 episodes of Series 4 was interesting enough. Just finished the 2nd four episodes and I had to force myself to watch it. Rather silly and boring at times, and I fast-forwarded thru many scenes of the golf course controversy. Seems rather like a time-killer than character-developing. Very little of the new priest in episodes , whom I found interesting in episodes I just finished watching seasons for the first time thank you Netflix and I have no desire to watch seasons Peter and Assumpta, their relationship to each other, and their relationships with the people in town were what hooked me on the show.
I just finished Assumpta's death and I can't even watch the last episode. I just can't do it. I was too invested in those characters. So painful! I think there was plenty to keep it going. First, there is the fallout after he decides to leave the church. That could take up a half season.
Then imagine Peter seeing the new priest come into town, him losing his special position and ability to help others in the town. And perhaps even him having to deal with regret at leaving the church. I honestly wish I would not have watched that last 10 minutes. I almost regret watching the entire series. Father Clifford's entry wins because all of the others are disqualified when it comes out that everyone else got Jamie Chung,a professional chef, to prepare them.
In the previous scene Father Clifford had told Assumpta he would leave the priesthood to be with her and he takes her aside to tell her he loves her. Throughout the episode Assumpta has been having problems with the pub's electric system and has been running down to the basement to fix it. The lights go out again, Assumpta goes down to the fuse box. We have watched it up to the end of season three where the writers did a dirty thing. Killing off Assumpta was as wrong a move as they could have made.
Her sharp tongue,tempered by her sweetness and vulnerability, were a large part of what made the show so great. She was a perfect offset for the Church. Without her on the show I'm not sure we will seek out the rest of the episodes. They just won't be the same. Up until this moment it was a perfect show, relating to the lives of very small town people in many places.
