The language My biggest criticism Adult Written by Shivom Oza January 18, What does cinema mean to you? Would you watch a musical mind you there are no dialogues, just songs , which is 2 hours 37 minutes long, purely because you love films? Do you believe that cinema has the ability to make you a better person? Do you believe that films change lives, or to put it a bit more mildly, your day?
This grand, elaborate lyrical presentation strikes a chord, and how! Circa , convict Jean Valjean Hugh Jackman is released on parole by prison guard Javert Russell Crowe , after serving a nineteen-year sentence. However, Jean escapes the parole and lives a comfortable life elsewhere, using a different name. Nine years later, he is caught by Javert. The plot spans 17 years and is set against a backdrop of political turmoil, which in the film culminates in the June Rebellion of France.
Special mention for the hilarious track, featuring Sasha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter, who infuse this melancholic film with lighter moments. Watch out for this electric and eccentric duo in the film. What about the visuals? The magnificent sets, the beautiful camerawork stupendous cinematography by Danny Cohen and the spellbinding costumes take you to that country, to that era!
The aerial shots are one of the best that you will ever witness on the big screen. Who needs gimmicks like 3D, 48 fps, when you can produce such marvellous visuals, without much ado?
The music of the film may be transcendental, but the visuals are not much far-behind on the mystical front! The film has been divided into four segments. Towards, the end, the segments take place in the backdrop of the French Rebellion. So, after all the romance and the tragedy, the latter half of the film manages to encapsulate patriotic fervour as well! Moreover, all the songs have been performed live on-set, so you may as well lavish more praise on their efforts.
This film is an achievement in itself. That little bit of magic! Shivom Oza. This title contains: Positive role models. Parent of a 11 and year-old Written by gooberchick January 11, After they saw the film, they had no awkward questions related to the prostitution.
They also seemed to have taken the violence in the film in stride. I would characterize my girls as being mature for their age. They loved the film so much they saw it again just a few days later with my husband and me. Parent Written by nsfb January 4, The movie is rated NC16 not for children under 16 in Singapore and I think they got this right. The story and music are inspiring, and the movie keeps well to the stage version, but it is still the story of the struggling of the poor, played out in all its grittiness.
The grittiness of the story is much more visual in the movie than in the play, making it less appropriate for kids. Parent of a 9 and year-old Written by Toronto Mom January 3, Moving but disturbing I love this musical in its onstage version, which has fantastic singers unlike a few of the movie characters and is able to portray difficult subjects, like prostitution, that adults understand but will go over kids' heads, in a way that makes it appropriate for all audiences.
However, the movie includes some graphic details the theatre version only implies, such as an ugly sexual scene between a captain and a despairing prostitute. Much of the emotional content of this movie is not appropriate for kids or young teens. Indeed, raising it above the surface is the point. But much of the drama and humanity get blitzed by the molotov cocktails. User Score. Write a Review. User Reviews. VonSeux Apr 24, Brutal movie. Echoes City of God but surprisingly its right on the heart of EU.
For anyone interested on social inequalities this movie is as revealing as a documentary, also directed by someone that comes from the background it descripts so you feel is no bull. Shadaha Feb 11, Gripping to the point that it had me pinned in my chair when the screen went black, shaken and speechless.
Evaluating from a place of pure emotion, this was the best film of the year. This stunning urban crime drama based on themes first introduced in the classic Victor Hugo novel of the same name provides a gritty contemporary twist on the notions of liberty, equality, fraternity and social justice and their all-too-frequent absence all these many years later.

Director Ladj Ly's Oscar-nominated offering for best foreign language film hits hard, seldom holding anything back and showing viewers a side of Paris rarely seen. With its fine performances, excellent cinematography and compelling electronic soundtrack by Pink Noise, the film captivates as it works its way through an increasingly tense narrative that leaves as many questions open as it resolves.
This version of "Les Miserables" may not superficially resemble any of those that have preceded it, but it leaves an impact just as emotionally powerful -- if not more so -- than any of its predecessors, bringing Hugo's message into the present and shoving it squarely in our faces.
GreatMartin Jan 31, Anyone expecting to see Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" whether the novel, the several films in theatres and on TV or the recent hit musical on stage and in film will be disappointed even though there is a Hugo quote and it takes place in the Parisian suburb of Montfermeil, an important part Anyone expecting to see Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" whether the novel, the several films in theatres and on TV or the recent hit musical on stage and in film will be disappointed even though there is a Hugo quote and it takes place in the Parisian suburb of Montfermeil, an important part of the book.
